This seminar, organised in collaboration with the Residencia de Estudiantes, continues this cycle celebrated since 2021, and is part of the line of work about «Democracy and Tolerance». In the previous seminars they have analysed some of the current problems they face in our democracies, such as the expansion of populism or the patterns of political action of an illiberal nature which is testing our capacity of resilience as open societies. This year will reflect on the current situation of democracy, from a theoretical perspective aswell as through studies of comparative cases and the means of defense available. It will tackle the dynamic which leads democracy to the authoritarianism: a complex and diffuse border with variations in each country, so it is difficult to evaluate when a democratical system has become a «competitive authoritarianism».
