The literary agent, as an intermediary between author and editor, for decades, a figure that is inseparable from the editorial activity. In Spain, the most famous milestone is the agency Carmen Balcells, created in 1960 and which had such an important role linked to the landing and the internationalization of the so-called boom of Latin american literature. The sale of its archive to the Spanish government in 2010 showed how well it had also functioned as a living memory of the creators.

In recent times the publishing world has become more complex with the emergence of numerous technological changes. The electronic edition, reading devices or ebooks, audiobooks, and recently artificial intelligence programs have rethought the essence and nature of the book, their way of consumption or reuse. To this must be added a constant flow of movement from paper to the screen that have demonstrated the importance of literature as a creator of arguments for the general public. Each one of these transfers has involved legal and practical challenges that have largely had to be managed by the agents.

The professionals who perform this work have mostly been women, in a world such as publishing that is almost always dominated by men. That is one of the traps that encloses the generic name "literary agent". The other is that, of course, the agents do not only work with literary rights, but also with children´s work, popularisation, practical books and commissioned books for political and show business personalities.

This conference proposes a dialogue between various stakeholders from the world of agencies, to reflect the variety of their professional tasks and their progressive specialisation.
