The translator's role as a bridge between languages is well known, and by fortune enjoying ever greater visibility. But much more ignored is its involvement in other aspects of the circuit editorial: since the proposal of titles to publish to the support in tasks of promotion.
As a person familiar with a particular language –and, often, with a theme or time period–, the translator may propose to the editors, the procurement of certain works or authors. In the event that they come from little known languages in Spain, your recommendation may be the only pathway by which this work come to awaken the interest of a possible editor. In addition, and with a certain frequency, a proper preface of the translator can lead to the issue, like a business card of a work or an author not previously known in your market. Even in the event that the editor has had prior notice of a particular work, the tip of the translator –and why not say, her offering to take care of the translation if you hire the work– you can pave the way to its publication.
From the point of view of the promotion, it is increasingly common to see the translators of a work by intervening in readings in libraries and bookstores, or to accompany the author in public presentations. It has even been the case with authors covered by a pseudonym –as Elena Ferrante– or already deceased, his translator becomes the only face of the work to the public. And with reason, given that, as stated in the topic –and it is true– after the author, the person who has read the play is his translator.
Finally, there are strange cases in which the translator creates a work about the author that he has been busy professionally, or presents, and coordinates a selection of his works. The work of medium, as well, can be complemented by the appearance of one's own voice from a new author.
The objective of this meeting is to bring together a select group of translators with an impact on the publishing world, for women to share their experiences and discuss possible means to increase the influence of these professionals in the circuit editorial.
