SCHOOL OF MEDIEVAL MUSIC
AND OF ORAL TRADITION 2021-2022

The School of Medieval Music and Oral Tradition opened its doors in the 2016-2017 academic year, for professional or amateur musicians, children, and families, have the opportunity to learn and sing the music of the 9th to 15th centuries and of our oral tradition. The School applies the practical model and essentially oral learning of the music used in the Middle Ages and even today, in the traditional music (hence the importance it attaches to the examples still alive music of oral tradition from around the world). It aims to restore the singing and melodic improvisation and polyphony as fundamental tools of learning. So, you start singing and later, taught the theory, and the musical notations of the different eras.

The School of Medieval Music and Oral Tradition it is directed by Paloma Gutiérrez del Arroyo (www.paloma gutierrezdelarroyo.com), a singer specializing in the music of the Middle Ages and in the theory and practice of the same, which ensures the annual courses of specialization and of initiation. This year will count with the participation of three great experts of the music of medieval and oral tradition: Catherine Schroeder (with music of Hildegard von Bingen), Christos Kanellos (byzantine chant within the annual course of monody) and Jota Martínez (for activities of construction of instruments in the family of the weekend).This year will once again feature three great specialists of medieval music and oral tradition: Dominique Vellard, Anne-Marie Lablaude, and Anne Delafosse, ensemble Gilles Binchois (in a joint master-class in medieval monody) and with Pelva Naik, great expert of dhrupad (song of indian tradition).

This School is part of the educational project of the Institución Libre de Enseñanza, centred on the transmission of knowledge and in educational research, which gave great importance to art music and folklore, and linked since its origins with the investigation of the lyrical medieval and traditional music.

WHO IS IT FOR: The teachings of the School are directed, according to the course, to the people and music professionals, fans; to teachers, and the faculty of music in general; students of the conservatory (grades Elementary to Upper) and Musicology, Philology, Art, History, etc (bachelor and Master); to people who are attracted by the sounds of the music of medieval and oral tradition, and by the process of oral transmission; and, moreover, to an audience of children and families. The hours of the annual courses are recognized as free credits for the students of science degree from the universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM) and the universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM).
