ILE

Who we are

The Institución Libre de Enseñanza (ILE) is a training centre and a centre of reflection on the future of education, science and culture, and a training center. It is committed to education as an essential factor for the autonomy and personal growth of citizens and for the progress and welfare of society. It conducts studies and research projects, courses, seminars, conferences and debates with programs that update the values linked to its tradition: appreciation and care for nature, peace, human rights and intercultural respect, tolerance, dialogue and participation, equality, solidarity and inclusion.

The Fundación Francisco Giner de los Ríos was created in 1916 after the death of Giner to pursue and to disseminate their work and ensure the survival of the Institution, and is responsible for the protection of heritage material, and intellectual assets.

Friends of the ILE

The Corporación de Antiguos Alumnos y Amigos de la Institución Libre de Enseñanza was started in 1892 by Francisco Giner de los Ríos and his co-workers in the ILE to reunite former students, bringing together like-minded people and collaborating in the activities of the Institution. In 1978, it was reinstated, with similar statutes and aims. Nowadays, it welcomes anyone who identifies with the the values of the Institution and wants to support them.

Rehabilitation of its headquarters

To give a decisive impetus to the work of the Foundation and to inaugurate a new stage in the activity of the ILE, its Board of Trustees launched the rehabilitation and expansion of its historical headquarters in the paseo del General Martínez Campos, Madrid in 2003, with the goal of saving the site, and to adapt it to current needs. The project was designed by the architects Cristina Díaz Moreno and Efrén García Grinda, and the landscape designer Teresa Galí-Izard.

Its culmination in the summer of 2014 introduced a new era for activity at the ILE: as a place of memory that retains and disseminates the historical Institutionalist legacy and as a centre of reflection and foresight to give impetus to the modernization of education and culture of our country, providing citizens with new educational and cultural infrastructure,.

Among other distinctions, the project was part of the Spain Pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale in 2014, and won the First Prize of the COAM in 2015.
